They have belief in themselves to make their points and argue their case and make their decisions rationally. They know that self-confident people know their own mind and won’t be easily swayed. Investors and potential employers love dealing with someone who has self-confidence. Think about all the successes that have got you to this point and be proud of them. Don’t hunch your shoulders, sit up straight and look people in the eye. A firm but not bone-crushingly firm handshake says a lot about a person. Dress for success and the success will find you. Be presentable, smart and tidy and you will automatically feel more confident. Dress like a business person, don’t saunter in looking like you’ve just wandered home after a night out. My advice on the best way to feel confident in this sort of situation is simple: fake it until you make it. You know your figures, you know your aims, and you have a firm belief in your business but the thought of speaking in front of these people makes you feel sick. Maybe it’s a job interview or you’re trying to secure investment or pitching your product to a potential supplier. Don’t listen to the negative thoughts trying to tell you that you can’t do it. Don’t take ridiculous risks, but if your gut feeling is telling you to go for something, then listen to it. Turn toxic thoughts that run around your head like “I can’t do this” into “I can do that IF I…” Take risks. Confident people don’t surround themselves with negativity. With more experience behind you, you’ll gain confidence. You’re always going to do things, with the benefit of hindsight, you will wish you’d done differently. That’s why today’s Ask Shaf is all about how to be confident in business.

I remember what’s it’s like to take your first steps into the unknown world of being an entrepreneur and I know it’s not easy. I’ve built up my businesses myself and I started out with nothing. “Of course Shaf’s confident, he’s got gazillions of successful businesses under his belt.” Sure, I’ve got 20 years’ experience of being an entrepreneur but don’t forget, no one handed this to me on a plate. WERE you a Britpop fan? Remember the opening line to Blur’s hit Parklife? Actor Phil Daniels famously starts it saying, “Confidence is a preference…” He’s got a point but I reckon in business, confidence isn’t so much a preference as a downright essential.
